ABPA partnered with the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for an intensive placement process into variety of BLM internships across the nation. The internships covered a wide span of majors for all students.

After careful consideration, BLM selected six competitive ABPA students to participate in their summer 2019 internships. Two of our students decided to shared their experience with us. We are so proud of all of our students!

SHADHAN AL KHARUSI

CIVIL ENGINEERING – ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO

Shadhan and Mohammed with their BLM Supervisor in Roswell, New Mexico.

My name is Shadhan Al Kharusi. I am a senior at the University of South Carolina. This summer the Arab-American Business & Professional Association (ABPA) helped my friend Mohammed Alamri and I get a full time, 11-week internship with the Bureau of Land Management in Roswell, New Mexico! Our responsibilities are to assist the engineering department and work in different offices as required. We have gained good experience through working on a variety of projects such as designing a campsite expansion, floor plans for buildings, bridge replacements, and parking lot plans.

Getting adapted to the new environment and traveling around different offices was challenging at first, but we managed by getting to know our co-workers. Throughout the internship, we had field trips with specialists who taught us about various aspects of BLM. Also, we were able to improve our teamwork and drawing skills through learning to use the software AutoCAD.

This internship was unique. It helped us gain knowledge and grow professionally. On our field trips, we were able to have our first caving experience in Fort Stanton Cave and to go on a mining trip in Carlsbad.

I never would have gotten this internship without ABPA, which assisted with many processes to help place Mohammed and I successfully in BLM. Furthermore, ABPA provided different webinars during the internship to help us develop our skills and take our experience to the next level.

MOHAMMED ALAMRI

CIVIL ENGINEERING – ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO

Mohammed and Shadhan at a BLM site for their summer 2019 internship.

Summer 2019 was one of the greatest summers I have ever had. I am thankful to the Arab-American Business and Professional Association for placing me in an internship with the Bureau of Land Management in Roswell, New Mexico.

I was a Civil Engineering intern. Our major responsibility was to assist the engineering department and other related departments. We worked on a lot of projects. One of the projects was to design recreation campsites for RVs. We determined the number of sites that could fit in the given area. We also, designed back-in and pull-thru sites based on BLM guidelines and standards. Another project we worked on was designing a parking lot. With the Civil Engineering Technician, we started off by surveying the area where the parking lot would be. Based on the points we obtained from the survey, we were able to draw and design the parking lot using AutoCAD.

The internship was not only about working and getting tasks done; we also had the chance to do things outside of work. We got the chance to go caving for the first time ever. It was amazing! We also got the chance to go out with other specialists like geologists and petroleum engineers. With a geologist from BLM, we had the opportunity to go into a mine where they extract a type of salt called potash. It was really a wonderful experience. With the opportunities that ABPA and BLM offered me, summer 2019 was full of great experiences.
